Known as “the stylized documentarian,” Derin specializes in finding stories that might ordinarily be overlooked and then telling those stories in an original way. He thrives on seeing the process all the way through, starting with visual and written concepts and finishing with a complete edit based on each project’s unique needs and parameters. Derin enjoys working closely with his clients in a true spirit of collaboration.
The son of bohemian parents, art and collaboration are in Derin’s blood. There were always multiple projects going on in his home – drawing, sculpture, calligraphy, photography and film. Seeing a print developed in a darkroom for the first time at the age of 12 sparked his passion for creating art behind the camera. He went on to study at Art Center School of Design, but says his true education came afterward, throughout the many years he’s spent working on sets, improving his filmmaking skills. “The beauty of setting up a camera, lights, and audio will always remain special and the fabric of who I am,” he says.
